What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is an appliance used to fill the space left by one or more missing teeth. A bridge can be made from a variety of materials, including gold, silver and porcelain. The type of material used will depend on the location of the missing tooth (or teeth) and your own personal preference.

How Does a Dental Bridge Work?

A dental bridge consists of two main parts: the pontic (the artificial tooth that fills the space left by the missing tooth) and the abutments (anchors that support the pontic and attach it to the adjacent teeth). The abutments are usually made from metal or ceramic and are bonded to the natural teeth on either side of the space left by the missing tooth. The pontic is then attached to the abutments, completing the bridge.

What Are the Benefits of a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge can restore the function and appearance of your smile by filling in the gaps left by missing teeth. In addition, a bridge can help to prevent your remaining teeth from shifting out of position.

What Should I Expect During the Procedure?

The first step in getting a dental bridge is to schedule a consultation with our dentist. During this visit, our team will examine your mouth and take X-rays to determine if a bridge is the right treatment for you. If so, Dr. Andrus will then prepare the teeth on either side of the space left by the missing tooth (or teeth) for the placement of the abutments. This usually involves removing some of the enamel from these teeth.

Once the abutments have been placed, Dr. Andrus will take an impression of your mouth which will be used to create the pontic (artificial tooth). It typically takes one to two weeks for the pontic to be made. In the meantime, we may place a temporary bridge in your mouth.

When the pontic is ready, you will return to our office for the final placement of the bridge. We will check to make sure that the fit is correct and then bond the bridge in place. You may experience some discomfort and soreness following the procedure, but this can be alleviated with over-the-counter pain medication.

You will need to see Dr. Andrus regularly for check-ups and cleanings after getting a dental bridge. With proper care, a bridge can last for many years.
